Case Study demonstrating the effective use of the Eclypse Boot on an arterial leg ulcer

Linda Gilbey - Practice Nurse, Abingdon Surgery

Introduction

When I joined the practice from being a district nurse I took on the role of wound management with focus on leg ulcer care and management.

I was presented with a 66 year old lady whose arterial leg ulcer was of full circumference of her right leg. The exudate levels were very high and required daily dressing changes.

The lady still works most days in a shop and finds leg elevation difficult at times. Sitting or standing for long periods caused most of the fluid to accumulate around the foot.

Method

The Eclypse Boot was trailed, initially using the regular boot, this required some trimming as the patients leg was short in length, however trimming was made easy by the segmentation of the boot, ensuring no compromise of the boot’s absorbency was made by not cutting into the absorbent layers.

I was then given the new small Eclypse Boot to trial which delighted me and the patient as it was a snug fit and easy to manage. The pre-shaped design, especially the fit around the foot and ankle helped within the management of excess fluid.

The patient found the Eclypse Boot dressing comfortable and the reduced amount of padding and dressings required caused less trauma and pain on dressing change. The smaller boot was much quicker to apply.

Conclusion

The leg ulcer has shown marked improvement and is healing The dressings only need changing on alternate days now.
